I have seen articles talking about what mental health advocates would ask a candidate. I have heard advocates talk about what they would say to a candidate if they had a chance to talk to them. (Links to articles below)
However, it does not matter. Why? The media won’t ask questions about how the candidates would SOLVE the mental health crisis. The candidates ignore emails, phone calls and social media contacts from the mentally ill and advocates.
Why? We, the mentally ill, are shoved to the side because the candidates are afraid to say the wrong thing. It has become a taboo subject Well, by not talking about, it adds to the stigma and we feel discriminated against. If you don’t think we are discriminated against read: I have a Dream Re: Mental Illnesses
I personally have emailed, sent mail and made phone calls and not one person in the media or a candidate/campaign has responded. I even drove two hours to see a candidate in person. The event was too large to have personal contact with the candidate. However, I was able to hand off a letter to this candidate’s handler who said they would get it to him. I also was interviewed by a newspaper and on a national news channel.
I am hopeful that this candidate and/or my efforts will get the candidates talking about an issue that is just as important as all the other issues-solving the mental health crisis will pay off. If not this time, I won’t give up. My vote, along with other mentally ill Americans matter and we need to know who to vote for. We care about other issues, but this affects us the most directly. In fact, it affects every American.
I understand that they are busy and can’t respond to everyone. However, I, a long with thousands of other advocates, have contacted them asking how they would solve the mental health crisis or at least have to talk more in depth about mental illness. We keep getting ignored.
As the founder/administrator of Advocates for Mental Illnesses and founder of several social media sites including Mental Health Advocates United, I am in contact with over 200,000 mental health advocates. I know that advocates around the country want the candidates to talk about mental health. Are they going to do it before we have to vote in the general election or primary election if we have not voted yet?
Many advocates will vote on the person who they think will help the mentally ill the most. How in the world are we supposed to do that when we can’t get them to talk about it?
Let’s not give up! Keep writing and making phone calls and going to events where the candidates will be and asking how they will solve the mental health crisis. Hopefully mental health advocates will know how a candidate stands on how they are going to SOLVE the mental health crisis that affects every American. With that knowledge each advocate can make a decision based on that since that means so much to so many people in our country. Below are my other blog articles related to asking the candidates talk about the crisis of mental illness that faces so man Americans. Below that are the articles mentioned in the first paragraph.
