World Bipolar Day 2015

 By Lois Caniglia

Today marks the second year dedicated to World Bipolar Day and it is my second year in recovery of my illness. I am the true meaning of manic and the definition of sadness. The date March 30th was chosen on the birthday of Vincent Van Gough.

“March 30th is also Vincent Van Gough, the famous painter, who cut off his ear and was post humorously diagnosed with probable bipolar disorder, also known as manic depression.”

                                              Kimberly M. Aguilina

I’m not a believer in Wikipedia as being true and factual but reviewing to learn the history of bipolar, it appears that my illness identified symptoms as far back as 1025. I have often wondered if there has ever been a time in history when bipolar behaviors were acceptable. Just like wisdom teeth and the appendix all had a purpose in the evolution of man. Is it possible that the bipolar mind had such a purpose?

I am so grateful to be living in a time when there is a movement to bring mental illness to the table of conversation. “There are 450 million people worldwide with mental illness. Of those it is estimated that the global prevalence of bipolar disorder is between 1-2 % and has said to be as high as 5%.” The World Health Organization describes that “one in four people will suffer from a mental or neurological disorder at some point in their lives.”

It should come as no surprise than that today, on Bipolar Day, we campaign to bring awareness and stamp out the stigma that haunts me.

For today, I cannot be silent on such an occasion for I am not alone. The social stigma is strong but I am strong enough to lend a hand to stamp the harm done out. I am dedicated to bring awareness of the life I lead as a bipolar. I will not stop. I will not be silenced. I will promote the International Bipolar Foundation for the hard work they do for me. All we need is love to support the journey of mental wellness.

I step off of my soapbox with no more shame.

Today marks the day that the world spreads awareness about Bipolar and Mental Illness.
It is a day that those who know about it, those who love someone with it or those who have it stand up and shout that “The STIGMAS must STOP!”

Lets open up our minds and begin to understand what many do not.

Lets open up our hearts and realize that this has gone on for decades and it is something that should be confronted with compassion, awareness and with the analysis of the break down of the myths that have been spewed from people’s mouths when it comes to mental illness.

World Bipolar Day, March 30, 2015

The date was selected because it’s the birthday of Vincent Van Gogh, who was diagnosed posthumously with what is believed to have been manic-depressive illness. For my part, I’m proud that people with this disorder are finally talking about it instead of hiding in a closet. Much of what our society believes about bipolar is wrong, and those of us with lived experience are the best source of information; but putting ourselves out there can still be risky for us due to discrimination in employment, loss of friendships and changes in our social status. I have experienced all three, so I know that prejudice against the…

Today I reached over 5000 views on this blog. Woohoo! I started this blog because I wanted to tell my story, because I was tired of semi hiding the fact that I had bipolar d/o. And most importantly, I started this blog so that other people who have mental illnesses might read my posts and find some comfort in them, find some help in them, some solace and strength. Thank you viewers, readers and friends for reading Bipolar1Blog!

DSCN5473 - Version 2 I am a Mom, a Molecular Biologist, I have an MSEd. I act in plays, I love to take pictures. I also have bipolar disorder type 1. Yes this disease has taken a toll on me, my life and my loved ones. But I fight it daily. I will never let it win. I am stronger than this illness. I did not choose to have this disease, but I do choose to never let it vanquish me. I choose to live my life with as little interference from this illness as possible. And I want to tell everyone with mental illnesses that if I can try and succeed, not totally, but to a large extent, then so can YOU!

World Bipolar Day, March 30, 2015

This is the second annual World Bipolar Day. It’s a day to raise awareness of bipolar disorders and the people who live with them. It’s also a day to educate the public in the hope of eliminating the stigma surrounding ALL mental illness. And the only way we can do that is to speak out.

I have experienced all three, so I know that prejudice against the mentally ill is very much alive and well in this supposedly enlightened era.

But on this World Bipolar Day, there is hope for the future. Celebrities such as Carrie Fisher and Catherine Zeta-Jones have come forward to discuss their condition in the public eye, which has helped some people with bipolar to feel less ashamed of their illness. It is my hope that the growing awareness will dispel the myths and make people without mental disorders realize that we are not to be feared, so that one day MI will be regarded with the same compassion given to physical illnesses.

Thank you for caring.
